We recently told you about what we thought were the most exciting smartphones of 2018, and the new Sony Xperia was one of those. Sony have since announced that they are releasing the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. The latest two models from the tech giant are in line with other flagship models for 2018.
When it comes to Sony smartphones, the names are always very confusing. History would suggest that the latest offering from Sony should be called the Xperia XZ1 Premium or Xperia XZ Pro, but Sony have decided to release the Xperia XZ2 alongside a compact version. And it’s not just the name that has unexpectedly changed…
Xperia XZ2 Design
Sony’s smartphone design was beginning to get a bit old-hat, and there were concerns that evenm the most loyal Sony fans would soon move on to the competition if Sony didn’t do something to make things a bit more exciting. Fortunately, Sony realised this scrapped the straight lines and blocky housings and introduced an ambient flow design.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 has 3D curved glass on both sides, featuring a subtle curvature of edges along the front, and a large bulge on the rear of the phone. The fingerprint scanner which has features on Xperia models for a few years is now ‘always on’, which means that it can scan your fingerprint and unlock the phone even faster than before. The Xperia also features the same IP68 waterproofing as the previous model.
Sony have also followed suit with the competition and ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack. This has been replaced with a USB-C for earphones. The Sony Xperia XZ2 with launch in four colours. These will be liquid black, liquid silver, petrol blue and ash pink. The Xperia XZ2 Compact will be available in black, white silver, petrol blue and coral pink. Both of the smartphones have a colour-coded user interface theme to match.
Xperia XZ2 Camera
What’s really exciting is the fact that the Sony Xperia XZ2 is the first smartphone from any manufacturer that is capable of recording 4K HDR footage in Hybrid Long Gamma using it’s motion eye camera. The Sony Xperia ZX2 and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact will be released globally this month, and will cost £699 and £549 respectively.

One response to “New Sony Xperia Release Date Confirmed”
I would have preferred if they kept same size for the compact… why do all phones have to increase their size every year? Should have kept the xz2 compact the same size as the xz1.
